So, I knew over the summer I'd have to recreate and re-rig my chap for my third year project. Really had no idea where to start though, given my second year project followed the time old method of "wing it". I lucked it, basically, with no documentation of how I did things over the way it was hard to reproduce.

Having trawled the interweb for various tutorials I discovered most of the online stuff assumes a fairly high level of knowledge, which frankly, I don't have. Book time then. A quick browse of Amazon and I discovered Autodesk offer their own books to learn Maya. How kind of them. At only 25 quid a book, I snapped up the three on offer. A Foundation course, a Modelling & Animation Handbook, and a Special Effects Handbook. The reviews were high and the key statement to me being "I'd never used 3d software before reading this book". I have used 3d software, but if some nitwit can start from scratch, it's good enough for me to rebuild a proper learning curve from.

Chapter 1 focuses on object creation and manipulation, and thusly I was lead to create this:

On we go to Chapter 2, "Detail".

Incidently, the book uses the animated film Surfs Up (that thing about the surfing penguin) as it's basis, as apparently the film was made entirely in Maya.

Not a huge amount I can post as most of my time has gone on painting up my clay model, pictures of which are still stuck on my phone.

I have however managed to perfect my attic sequence. Removed the fogging effect from the street light (it didnt work as I wanted it to anyway), moved the streetlight to cast a shadow on the far wall, smoothed the fog from the downstairs light and finally - added an actual window frame to the dormer window. The main part though was being able to properly fix the allignment so the transition from 3d to 2d is completely smooth. Quite chuffed with it too.

http://www.melville.biz/UniAnim/merged_v10.avi (if the link doesnt work when you click it, it's probably not finished uploading yet, bigger file to avoid XViD encoding)

Well on course with everything else for next Fridays hand in. Written work is just lacking a conclusion, some images and a bilbiography, all of which doable inside an hour. I do need to dope up the attic sequence, but that shouldn't take too long (it still confuses me that retroactive doping is allowed, but I won't complain). The clay model is done aside from a mouth. Then it's just a case of collating it all into a front end website for digital submission.

Jobs a goodun.

So, just wrote a long entry, but Quicktime crashed Firefox and then the site proceeded to lose the recovered entry.

gg.

Short version...

I turned this:

http://www.melville.biz/UniAnim/final_project.mov

Into this:

http://www.melville.biz/UniAnim/y1toontest2.avi

Using Toon Boom, which is an utter arse of a program.

I then matched it with my 3d sequence to make this:

http://www.melville.biz/UniAnim/merged_v4.wmv

I had spent a couple of hours fixing the orientation so the transition from image to animation would take place without any noticeable jump or movement, but then when I did the high quality render it all moved, and I don't know why. I've had enough for today anyway, and going to get a beer.

Being unable to understand this alien concept of 'blogging' (Yes its umpteen years old), I figured the only way to possibly understand it is to take the bull by the horns and write one myself.

So I bring forth to you the amazing world of an unsatisfactory geordie and his profound musings.

First up, its amazing how the two feelings of pure joy and slight loneliness juxtapose themselves when Roast has fucked off down the country. On the one hand its refreshing to be able to go for a piss as and when required (which given my tea consumption rate is fairly often), yet on the other hand I miss having a target for derogatory cliches. This could probably be half the reason for my scribblings here today. I'm fairly certain that upon his return I'll once again be met with despair and anguish (This may be a dramatisation, hes a twat nonetheless though). However I shall enjoy the moment as it is, fuelled by,

which leads me onto my next subject, debauchment.

To many people the idea of being fuelled by narcotics denotes weakness. Well, in some cases it certainly holds true, I smoked dope for an unnecesarily long time just because it was the easy option, and in that case I'll agree with the sentiment. However there are many other cases where the urge to become intoxicated is in my eyes a testament to ones desire for enjoyment. Right now I'm sipping on a Macallan at 12 in the afternoon, which to some may seem as though I'm just becoming an alcoholic. Well my perception of the matter is that if I can still carry out my day in the same manner as I would had I not consumed this fine slice of Scotland (Which is a rare beast to be savoured indeed!) then why not enjoy some merriment along the road? I've briefly mentioned him elsewhere but there is a club DJ that goes by the name of Sven Vath. This intriguing German fellow partakes in various forms of narcotics, whilst playing, and continues the adventure for days afterwards. Is it to his detriment to get so heavily debauched? Hes now in his 40s and as far as I can tell is still enjoying his toxicity, anyone who wraps toilet paper around there head and does keep fit video esque stretches whilst performing in a trendy london nightclub certainly knows how to enjoy life in my book anyway.
I have arrived at the rough conclusion that its not what you do, its how you do it. If I was to take the exact same cocktail as Sven but within the confines of my own bedroom then I can be pretty certain that I'd probably go batshit bonkers. But given a dark room, and loud music and some jovial acquaintances, the same cocktail of narcotics can be enjoyed to its fullest, with only a slight inflammation of the nasal passage. Or in my case, if I was to sit being miserable and aiming to drown my sorrows whilst listening to an angsty band such as My Chemical Romance I may be suicidal, but armed with a keyboard and a recording of Lee Burridge from a recent performance in Romania, I can quite safely say 'I'm lovin it' (Macdonalds got it right, I bet Ronald loves to get trollied).

Well thats the first of my profound musings, and after typing all that I can say its quite an interesting pastime. Me and my glass of Macallan shall now depart to places unknown (Wallsend), tune in next time for a further insight into the mind of the profound ex-stoner that is I!

Further to a Radio 1 discussion Grumpy Old Men the programme on telly which is sort of a talking heads where basically ageing men talk about things that annoy them. Great concept, but then they spoilt it by making Grumpy Old Women, which in many aspects is the same programme but with women instead of men. The idea that women as they get older get grumpy is just all kinds of wrong, women become grumpy at or around the time they become called women. Also they tapped upon the idea that there isn't really any funny women around, i'll quote who they classed as funny women; Dawn French, Jennifer Saunders, Victoria Wood and then they ran out of women. Lets look at them names, of them i would only class Victoria Wood as genuinely funny though she becomes infinately more funny with Julie Waters, Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders are only funny together , never apart. Grumpy who is best, discuss

Just two weeks from the end of the academic year we have finally received a fixed descriptive brief for the written assignment. Yay!

However........

Just two weeks from the end of the academic year we have finally received a fixed descriptive brief for the written assignment. Yay!

However..... it doesn't remotely match what I've been doing. In fact, it's a joke. I'm just a few days work away from producing a pretty stunning research and commentative piece on the origins of animation in Hollywood, chock full of references and quotations for the academic folks, it's really quite something.

What I am now meant to hand in though is quite frankly insulting in comparison. A meagre 1500 word piece chronicling the learning experiences of the year with research expected only on seminar materials and guest lectures that we've had. That's it. Fifteen hundred words.

I've spent the last six months forcing myself to do this research project. I've hated it every step of the way, and it's hated me, but I've given it my all as I know this degree is my one shot at moving from "unemployed home dwelling tosser" to "employable asset". To get this close to the end and find out it was a waste of time is a bit unnerving. Blood boiling in fact.

I did also get the hand in brief Mark promised us, also a lot easier than I expected it to be. Yay. Gives me more time to perfect my animation piece...

...oh wait, no, it doesn't, as I am now officially banned from doing any more practical work at the studios until I've done my written work. I guess I should be happy about being told "you've already done enough to pass this year with flying colours", but I'm not, I want to do more. The innate perfectionist in me says it's not good enough and I am capable of more. I just can't do it though, because I've got to do this childsplay "written piece", a whole two sides of A4, woe is me.

Ranting over.

In a final act of defiance, I did sneak out a render of the latest version of the attic scene.

http://www.melville.biz/UniAnim/the_moon_v1.avi

Increased the lighting from the streetlight outside. Toned down the fogging a little from the light downstairs. Created a fluorescent tube and moved the attic light there (still haven't done a string to pull yet though). Created a mock newspaper article to use as the lead-in to the drawing. Once I get the written stuff done, I can clean-up trace my linetest and get it into Toon Boom to colour up for the final hand in.

Made a few more changes to the scene today, mostly textures and lighting. Did carve out the dormer window as well though, which allowed me to add a streetlight as a second source.

http://www.melville.biz/UniAnim/textured_camera1.avi - usual moving camera shot, but no merge with 2d in this one
http://www.melville.biz/UniAnim/text...erspective.avi - same scene but from a fixed camera viewpoint for checking

Time is cracking on now. My final hand in deadline is next Friday (23rd May). I'm very safely on course for a pass in this module thanks to the above movie, but there are several more to get finalised still. I need to finish this sodding written work (having any kind of brief would help, but we dont get that, literally just 'research something' and that's it), have clocked around 5000 words so far and only 2/3s done, and last week was told ideally it's a 1500-2000 word job only. Great stuff. Also need to get my storyboard and animatic finalised, although that's mostly done. My Y2 clay model is apparently painted to a sufficient level for hand in too.

The crunch though comes in the hand in format. We're not just submitting our work this time it seems, but have to dress it up and present it as if we were at a job interview. That includes a digital rolling portfolio as well as covering letter and CV (seriously, why I do need to write a CV for a fucking animation BA, stupid government initiatives).

On top of that I still want to get a 2d render done with Toon Boom, but for that I need to trace off last years project line test (around 300 cels) into black ink on A4 paper (as the A3 sheet-feed scanner at uni isn't working, and the sheet-feeder at home won't take 12F animation paper) then get that coloured up in black & white to merge with my attic scene properly. Actually.....hmmm, could do a pair of 2d scenes with more cg in between, but I think I may be pushing my luck there a bit. Also want to get cracking painting up my Y1 clay model more, but that'll never be handed in, it's just for my own practice.

And...AND, I've been invited to give a talk at an open workshop being held in the town centre next week as part of a local recruitment drive by the University. Rock on. Unfortunately part of this will involve me giving demonstrations on a lightbox, which really never was my strong point.
